Environmental Institute for Golf

The Environmental Institute for Golf is committed to strengthening the compatibility of the game of golf with our natural environment. In January 2003, The Institute evolved from The GCSAA Foundation, originally established in 1955, with a new name, mission and focus. The Institute concentrates on delivering programs and services involving information collection, research, education and outreach that communicate the best management practices of environmental stewardship on the golf course.

Today, The Institute funds more than $1 million annually in environmental programs, including scientific research, education, information collection, outreach and scholarships.

Its website includes a wealth of information on the Institute’s focus areas: Water Management, Integrated Plant Management, Wildlife and Habitat Management, Energy and Waste, Management, Golf Course Siting, Design and Construction.

Golf Course Environmental Profile

Environmental Institute for Golf

In 2006, the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) conducted the first in a series of five surveys to determine the physical features of golf courses, maintenance practices used by superintendents, and inputs and outputs associated with golf course management.

The goal of the research is to develop an environmental profile of golf courses. By mid-2009, GCSAA had conducted all five surveys, with the results of the final two studies scheduled for release in 2010. There are currently three reports you can download on:

Property Profile and Environmental Stewardship of Golf Courses
Water Use and Conservation Practices on U.S. Golf Courses
Nutrient Use and Management on U.S. Golf Courses
