The Valderrama Golf Club is one of the best known golf clubs in Europe. It is located in the resort of Sotogrande, San Roque in the Andalusia region of southern Spain, a few miles from Gibraltar, and has a single 18-hole course, along with a 9-hole par 3 course.
Golf Overview:
Valderrama was constructed in 1974 as "Sotogrande New", to the designs of golf course architect Robert Trent Jones.
Renamed "Las Aves" in 1981, it was acquired by Jaime Ortiz-Patiño in 1984. The golf course was redesigned and expanded by the original architect and became "Valderrama."
By 1999, Valderrama was rated the top course in mainland Europe by Golf World magazine.
The fourth hole, La Cascada, is the course's signature hole. It is a par 5 with a pond to the right of the two-tiered green. The practice ground was called the best in Europe by Nick Faldo.
Project Overview:
At the end of 2013 a full renovation of the irrigation system has been decided. Among several other main Golf irrigation competitors, the old Valderrama Satellite system, as well as pump station and rotors have been changed for the last generation of Rain Bird hardware and software.
Cirrus central control software enables to “see” the course like no other central control system can. With state-of-the-art ET-based scheduling, customized course graphics and multiple mapping options, Cirrus makes controlling irrigation system fast and easy.
Challenge:
The greenkeeper team is focused on providing the absolute best playing surface for elite golf players.
“Valderrama has built a reputation over the years as one of the top golf facilities in the World; we are committed to the constant search of excellence and Rain Bird is a great partner in this new journey.” said Javier Reviriego, General Manager, “The high standard of professionalism the team has shown during the negotiation process has been a key factor in our decision at that time.”
Valderrama Golf Club has relied since then on Rain Bird irrigation systems to provide best-in-class system control and precise, uniform irrigation. Rain Bird Iberica’s team of experienced professionals provided designs and specifications, and supervised the installation of these systems along with local distributors, contractors and consultants.
