The relocation of Royal Norwich Golf Club to a new site at Weston Park has cleared its final hurdle following the granting of planning permission for 1,000 homes to be constructed on the club’s present course at Hellesdon.

The existing golf course at Weston Park is to be replaced with 27 new holes designed by Ross McMurray, the lead designer on this project for European Golf Design and the development will also include a magnificent new clubhouse by Fielden & Mawson Architects.

Ross, a Senior Member of the European Institute of Golf Course Architects, said:

“I am delighted that Broadland District Council Planning Committee has given its approval for this exciting new project, subject to the 106 agreements being finalised. Having worked with Royal Norwich Golf Club for some six years I know just how pleased and excited everyone is to reach this important milestone. Royal Norwich has a very clear vision of its future and what is required from the new facilities that will be created at Weston Park and it has been a pleasure to assist the club’s development committee in the planning of their future home.”

The new golf club will include an 18 hole course that will play from 5,500 yards to 7,150 yards in length and also a 9 hole short course of 2,000 yards to provide an option for golf in a shorter time frame and as a less demanding test for new players and juniors. A driving range with covered bays, as well as a dedicated short game practice area and two practice putting greens will also be built.

Ross McMurray continued: “Our aim is not only to create the premier members golf club in the region but to provide courses that will appeal to golfers of all ages as part of Royal Norwich Golf Club’s objective to create a warm and friendly environment for their members, families and guests. With the drive and ambition of Royal Norwich I am confident that this exciting new development will be a huge success and will perhaps provide a template for the rejuvenation of other golf clubs around the country”.

Construction work is planned to begin later this summer. Golf will continue at Royal Norwich Golf Club’s present site in Hellesdon until the new courses at Weston Park are ready for play.
