The Etelä-Saimaa golf course situated outside Villmanstrand in south east Finland has been voted the best golf course in Finland. EIGCA Member Peter Fjällman has designed the course and it opened for play in 2006. The course is laid out on a peninsula with many of the golf holes running along the shoreline of Finland's biggest lake Saimen. The course has over the years been voted the most beautiful golf course in the country but this year when all the different categories were counted it was selected the best golf course by the Finnish golfers.
"I feel very happy and proud what we manage to achieve with a very difficult site. The scenery was there but getting an interesting and playable golf course in harmony with the landscape was a challenge. So getting the appreciation from the golfers feels great," says Peter and continues, "At the same time I was designing and building another 18 hole golf course outside Finland's second largest city Tampere called Lakeside GC and it was voted the 9th best golf course".
