Solving the Toughest Turf Challenges: Championship Turfgrasses from EIGCA Bronze Partner Pure Seed

Turfgrass selection has a significant impact on a project’s long-term success. Matching the unique set of circumstances of each job with the strengths and benefits offered by different turf species and varieties helps to ensure that an architect’s vision is realized.

When selecting the turfgrass for Royal Greens Golf and Country Club, the team from European Golf Design had to consider the brutal summer heat of Saudi Arabia, the site’s poor water quality, and the humid and salty environment due to the course’s proximity to the ocean. In addition, higher than average performance expectations were set to meet the championship schedule of the new course.

Pure Seed’s Pure Dynasty® Seeded Paspalum, developed by Pure-Seed Testing and marketed globally by Atlas Turf International, met the criteria with remarkable heat tolerance and unmatched salt tolerance. The turfgrass, planted wall-to-wall, delivered superior performance for Royal Greens as a stop on the European Tour for three Saudi International tournaments thus far, crowning champions Dustin Johnson in 2019 and 2021 and Graeme McDowell in 2020. Royal Greens also hosted the Aramco Saudi Ladies International in 2020, with Emily K. Pedersen claiming the title.

Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Italy, recently redesigned by European Golf Design, also selected turfgrasses from Pure Seed and Atlas Turf in preparation to host the 2022 Ryder Cup. Pure Dynasty was chosen for the fairways, tees, collars, approaches, and driving range tees. The paspalum turfgrass offers rapid growth and quick recovery, advantageous during challenging Italian summers. In addition to its performance advantages, Pure Dynasty has a texture matching that of the cool season grasses planted on the rest of the golf course. Neither bermuda nor zoysia offers this feature.

Pure Distinction Creeping Bentgrass from Pure Seed was selected for the Marco Simone greens with dense, upright, aggressive growth and less thatch to provide smooth and true putting surfaces. A blend of Pure Seed tall and fine fescues was selected for the roughs and delivers brown patch resistance and a deep root system for excellent performance under stress. The fescue blend is heat tolerant and uses less water.

With a complete portfolio of advanced, high-performance warm and cool season seeded turfgrasses, no turf challenge is too difficult for Pure Seed. Turfgrass selection has never been easier for an architect’s vision to leave a mark.
