Major Championships Trust EIGCA Silver Partner Better Billy Bunker

Two recent major championship host facilities have seen first-hand the benefits of Better Billy Bunker.

Both Bethpage State Park’s Black Course (USPGA Championship) and the Country Club of Charleston (United States Women’s Open) feature bunkers constructed using the BBB method. These courses offer strikingly different bunkers and prove the method is successful across all varieties of architectural design.

Bethpage Black is known for its high flashed, intimidating bunkers. With 78 bunkers covering over 30,000 square metres, maintenance could have easily become an overwhelming proposition. With numerous rain events prior to and during tournament week, Better Billy Bunker showed its worth. Under the direction of Andrew Wilson, the staff and volunteers at Bethpage were not faced with the unenviable task of repairing washed-out bunkers. Rather, they dialed in a course worthy of major championship golf.

The Country Club of Charleston features bunkers on the opposite end of the design spectrum. The club has stayed true to Seth Raynor’s challenging green complexes and predominantly flat-bottomed bunkers. Like Bethpage, the club received several heavy rain events during the US Women’s Open. And once again, Better Billy Bunker proved invaluable as there was no standing water or washouts which would have resulted in further delay of play. The Country Club of Charleston proves that traditional design CAN co-exist with modern technology.

Jerry Lemons, President of Better Billy Bunker, was honored to attend the recent EIGCA Annual Meeting in Paris, France. The educational programmes were informative and relevant and the golf courses were excellent (although the scores may not have been!) Lemons said, “It’s always a pleasure to spend time with our friends in the EIGCA. The wealth of knowledge and talent within this group is a huge benefit to the golf industry. I want to thank all the members for a wonderful experience in Paris!”

As the leading bunker construction method, Better Billy Bunker has been involved in bunker renovations at over 1,000 courses worldwide. For additional information, please contact +1 615.847.8877 or info@betterbillybunker.com
