In 2009, more than 30 tournament circuits staged events in over 50 different countries and offered close to half a billion euros of prize money, clearly demonstrating the interest of fans and sponsors in the game.
Although the recent economic downturn has impacted sponsorship spend in most industries, research indicates that tournament golf has proven to be relatively resilient to this phenomenon. What’s more, the growth of the game in emerging markets, fuelled by media interest in successful professionals from a variety of new golfing nations, and the sport’s return to the Olympics in 2016, is seen as a potentially powerful driver of future growth.
