New Orleans is a Lolium perenne newly listed on the European catalogue with the unique ability to spread via reproductive tillers.

Sold as “CSI-Rye” in the US, New Orleans shows remarkable improvements over other ryes marketed as spreading.

Its turf quality is equal to top varieties that do not have this desirable tillering feature.

New Orleans has the exciting ability to repair its own damaged turf in sod production, sports fields and golf courses unlike regular perennial ryegrasses that never will.

Another added benefit is its lower seeding rate from regular perennial ryegrasses, 3 lbs/1000 ft2 (15 g/m2). It is quickly becoming the go-to variety for innovative turf managers.

Effingham Golf Club, 18th hole

Sympathetic alterations to two well-known Harry S Colt-designed courses have been carried out recently by specialist sports turf and water engineering contractor, MJ Abbott Ltd.

Royal Wimbledon Golf Club saw MJ Abbott working to design and specifications produced by architect, Hawtree Limited, to open up the 1st hole (previously a narrow dog-leg right) and re-align the 18th hole to provide an improved and more challenging approach to the green. The works included two new fairway bunkers, a rebuilt green complex, new tee complex and re-contoured fairways, all completed using existing turf, wherever possible.

At Effingham Golf Club, MJ Abbott built a new green complex, tee complex and fairway bunkers on the 18th hole and rebuilt the 5th green complex and approach bunkers in accordance with the design of Tom Mackenzie of Mackenzie and Ebert Ltd.

A key element of this project also was the re-utilisation of existing turf and the careful blending of imported rootzone materials which match the natural soils on which the golf course was originally laid out.

Green 11 North course

Semillas Fito is proud to announce the successful seed supply to the newest golf complex in Spain, Soto de Mazanaque in Madrid with 36 holes designed by the prestigious Jack Nicklaus Team.

All the greens were seeded with T-1 Agrostis stolonifera, which was the variety chosen by the architects because of its unbeatable dark green color, highest density, putting trueness and availability to crowd out Poa annua.

In three months after seeding the greens were able to play.

For Tees a Bentgrass blend was chosen (L-93, PUTTER and SOUTHSHORE) with excellent results.

For Fairways of the North course the same Bentgrass blend was chosen (L-93, PUTTER and SOUTHSHORE) with excellent results.

For the South course Fairways and semi-rough areas, the turfgrass blend selected was 10% Lolium perenne AZIMUTH, 10% Lolium perenne CADDIESHACK, 20% Poa pratensis AVALANCHE, 20% Poa pratensis LIBERATOR, 20% Poa pratensis AWARD and 20% Poa pratensis NUGLADE.

For Outrough was selected Festuca ovina PASHMINA. The obtained results have been excellent.
