Welcome!

While here in Europe we occasionally have bad weather impacting golf courses, we rarely experience anything like the three hurricanes which hit the Caribbean and southern USA last year. In this issue we have accounts from two Members, Tom Marzolf and Jeff Danner, of restoration work following these events. We also have an article by Augie Pizá about First Tee México – a project to get children and young people engaged in golf.

We also continue with our series of Member Profiles with Q&As with Past Presidents of the EIGCA, Peter Harradine and David Williams.

New for this issue is the start of a series of Partner Profiles – beginning with MJ Abbott who has been a Partner since 2001.

EIGCA News

The EIGCA has launched a CPD Programme for members to demonstrate their commitment to maintaining their professional expertise. Members recently attended an event organised by Rain Bird for this purpose – and they will now get CPD points for it! In a change from the usual practice, the EIGCA entertained their Partners at an informal gathering at BTME this week.

The winter months are typically quiet for our members. One member’s course has been voted the Best in Finland, another has been renovating a course in Connecticut, and we have a review of another’s projects for 2017.

Our Gold Partner Rain Bird has upgraded its control software at Royal Aberdeen. One of our Silver Partners John Deere has supplied maintenance equipment to Quinta do Lago, for use on the Portuguese resort’s three 18-hole championship courses in the Algarve. Another Silver Partner, Textron Golf, the Ipswich-based manufacturer of Jacobsen commercial mowing equipment, is showcasing the new AR series and TR series at the BIGGA Turf Management Exhibition (BTME) in Harrogate.

In this issue we have Spotlight on heather on the golf course. There is a growing recognition of the importance of heather as a vital habitat for wildlife, and as a part of the golf course, and there are particular challenges when it comes to its management. We have added a number of books to the Library – Remarkable Golf Courses, Another Journey Through the Links, and several of the books mentioned in the article on heather management.
