Golf participation in Europe is slowing

Golf Participation in Europe

KPMG's Golf Advisory Practice has published its Golf Participation in Europe 2010 survey, which highlights significant demand and supply changes in the European golf market.
Among a number of interestings findings, the survey highlights that the UK and Ireland experienced a 4% decrease in the number of players last year.
While the number of registered golfers grew by 5% annually across Europe until 2005, our research suggests that since then, demand growth has slowed down in the second half of the decade to 1-2% per year. The current global economic pressures have also affected many European countries, with nine having suffered a decrease in participation over the past 12 months.

Courses Called Crackers: One Golfer’s UK Quest, by R N A Smith

Courses call crackers cover

'A part-time golf writer gets the royal treatment from a host of fine UK golf clubs in exchange for his implied promise to sing their courses' glories in this memoir that meshes a Finegan-like travelogue with the poignancy of Plimpton's Bogey Man and the vinegar of Doak's Confidential Guide.
Traveling solo, the author has his vigour roundly tested by a quest to play 36 courses. And, along the way – in a wholly honest account – the reader gets taken inside the golfer's mind when encountering the alluring yet treacherous terrain at one great links after another, along with engaging the natives who call these courses "Crackers."'
